BBC Sport’s Wimbledon spot, whacky Thai & Japanese ads: creative ideas of the week

There are hundreds of commercial messages vying for our attention everyday across traditional and new media. Only a handful are noticed. Here are a few creative ideas which caught my eye, the week ending 30th June, 2017: BBC Sport’s delightful teaser for Wimbledon, W+K Amsterdam’s work for Instagram Stories and more.

1. BBC Sport: Wimbledon coverage

It’s Wimbledon time of the year. Here’s a new spot from BBC Sport announcing the live coverage of the event. The device is simple – a tennis ball wreaking ‘havoc’ across Britain and ending up at the centre court. Even though this montage of visual set to music is a common format the ad is riveting.

2. Verena Sure

Thanks to this commercial, I came across this category called of drugs called Chitosan – apparently, it is believed to have use in limiting fat absorption, and hence, useful in dieting. A Thai ad highlights this benefit as only Thai ads can.

Agency: McCann, Bangkok

This won a Gold at the recent Cannes Lions festival.

3. Tsuruya – tiles

Product demo ads can be fun. Here’s an ad to demonstrate the toughness and durability of a brand of roof tiles from Japan. The ad takes the humorous route to showcase how the tiles withstand extreme weather conditions. Loved it.

4. Motilal Oswal

Some categories are considered ‘boring’ in advertising. I guess stock broking is one of them. Here’s a refreshingly different ad in the category aimed at conveying the single minded focus of Motilal Oswal’s business line – stock broking. What aids the single mindedness of the messaging is the erm…single mindedness of the brief.

5. Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories, at 250 million daily active users is clearly a runaway success. A new campaign showcases the various creative possibilities of the tool: stickers, brushes and live video enhance any story.

Inspired by the endless ways that the Instagram community is already using Stories tools, it demonstrates the infinite ways that stickers, Boomerang, brushes and the Live function can help turn any moment into something special – that ‘Stories Are Everywhere’.

Agency: W+K, Amsterdam

The campaign included over 270 billboards and guerrilla out-of-home efforts. ‘Parrots of the Caribbean’ and ‘hot dog’ were stand outs for me.

6. French Red Cross: Super Granny

Here’s a fun film urging people to donate to a good cause.
